Pilkington Sailing Club Enterprise Open Meeting 201015th May 2010 One Visitor and five home boats entered to race at Eccleston Mere, Sausage Baps were in great supply as competitors prepared their boats. The wind was a shifty force 1 -2 and increased and swung from west to south west through out the day. Steve Hunt who has won the event more times than we cam remember was OD and Bill & Diane Rhodes help with the administration. Race 1: The water boat start had flustered all sailors as they seemed to ignore the start line as the race begun. Martin Rusk & Steve Colley (Pilkington) had sailed the beat very well and Tack on every shift to meet Richard at the windward mark. Richard took the lead and created a gap with his extra boat speed. Paul Shepherd & Steve Bristow (Pilkington) found the split shift up the second beat and move into 2nd place behind Richard. Richard soon increased his lead further as Royston Taggart and Diane Roberts (Pilkington) caught Paul. Royston eventually overtook Paul as they had a little match race through the following lap. Karen Morris & Lisa Woods (Etherow) pulled their way through the fleet to emerged in third. Positions stayed the same for the finish of the race. After lunch which was Cottage Pie and vegetables and plenty of cakes. The food was enjoyed by all. Race 2: Richard again created a superior start with a port flier unnoticed by the other five competitors. Royston suddenly sprung into life up the first beat and over took Richard. Richard regained the lead only to lose it again at the following mark. Royston was under extreme pressure as Richard seemed to be attached to his transom for a lap. Royston held his nerve and soon created a gap and increased his lead to the finish. Richard seemed to lose his cool with a few mistakes. Richard finished in second with the girls catching up. Race 3: All to play for, Richard and Royston both could win the event. Richard and Royston had both taken the lead through the race. Royston had a starboard shout up the beat and Richard tacked late securing a 720. Richard again caught Royston to battle for first. Richard took the lead briefly with Royston taking underneath. Richard Hailed windward boat and touched. Royston ignored shouts for protest and crossed the line in 1st. Protest commenced soon after with Royston disqualified from the race. Richard Critchley was announced 2010 winner of the Pilkington Challenge trophy.
