Restoration of Hyperactive 21333 Part2

If you remember we were waiting on the melamine sheets for the centreboard well we found a place in Liverpool which supplied off cuts. The centerboard case was built to the same measurements as the previous one. Glue together and was ready for including into the boat.

The boat had the slight damage in the hog. We glued a nice piece of wood with a point so the repair would have some character.

The next job was to fit the centreboard case to the boat. This was more difficult than you, think, as we had to make sure the boat was perfectly level from front to back and side to side. Plumb lines Lasers and spirit level was all used. The next job was to see if the centreboard would be level. We clamp a few areas for the centerboard case to be included in the boat. We then supplied the boat with the centreboard. Dropping the board to half. We had plump lines front and aft and a laser was set up. If the centreboard were true and all the positions would line up. After a few goes we achieved a true straight line from front to aft using the laser.

We then had to figure out how to glue the centerboard with a time scale of lets say, max of 30mins. We ran through the procedure a few times so we knew what to do at the right time. Eventually we managed to secure the case to the boat.

I finished two packing the decks and turned the boat over to tackle any damage on the hull. There were quite a few damaged areas I filled the areas with epoxy, sanded and sprayed with car paint. Just to create a uniform look.

I set the boat up a few weeks later and was ready to sail Hyperactive for the very first time.

I found the boat very different to any other Ent. She is very lively, tippy and keeps telling me off all the time. She just wants to be flat and she doesn’t tell you she shouts it.

Work is still in progress as I have found some teething problems. The thwart keeps buckling under jib tension. She also needs mast rake reducing as she is just pointing far to high and various other small problems. Shouldn’t be long before they are all ironed out.

Plenty of pictures on the photo page.

A Very Happy Steve Blackburn
